In his latest editorial in the Nov/Dec issue of Drilling Contractor, IADC Chairman Brad James reflects on the drilling industry’s evolution over the past 85 years. He emphasizes that at its core, the industry is defined by its commitment to providing Clean, Affordable, Reliable and Efficient energy in Sustainable ways.
James acknowledges the industry has faced unprecedented challenges, including shifting public perceptions and the complexities of its role in providing clean energy. However, he expresses confidence in the industry’s ability to rise to these challenges.

“We’ve been implementing the principles of ESG for decades. Taking care of the environment, protecting our people, and giving back to our communities is in our industry’s DNA.”
The chairman notes a cultural shift in the industry over the past 25 years, moving away from an “every man for himself” mentality towards increased teamwork and a focus on looking out for one another. He argues the industry is actually one of the safest in which to work, with a continuous drive to innovate and improve operations.
Looking to the future, James emphasizes the growing importance of the drilling contractor’s role, as oil and gas remain a vital part of the energy mix, especially given the projected increase in electrical power requirements due to the rise of artificial intelligence.
