The IADC Young Professionals Committee recently hosted a professional development event discussing “Making Memorable First Impressions: The Skill of Impromptu Speaking.” The event was held at Transocean on 10 July.
A group of expert facilitators from Toastmasters International, led by Transocean Senior Manager Andrew Gordon Rennie, helped attendees hone the skill of impromptu speaking. They covered key techniques including:
- The importance of body language, gestures, and facial expressions
- How to warm up and focus when nervous
- Speaking with vocal variety
Attendees then had a chance to practice what they learned in breakout groups. They were given a topic to speak on for 1-2 minutes, then received valuable feedback from the group. It was a very collaborative and engaging experience.
