The IADC Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Student Chapter recently organized an educational field trip to the Charlvon D203 Drilling Rig in Emede, Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria.
During the visit, students gained valuable experience with real world drilling operations. The trip helped them connect classroom theory with practical applications.
They learned how drilling mud is pumped from the mud pits through the drill string into the formation. The students toured the mud section and studied key solids control equipment such as the Shale Shaker, Desander, Desilter, Degasser, Poor Boy Degasser, and mud tanks.
They were also introduced to major rig components, including the derrick, draw works, rotary table, top drive, crown block, traveling block, swivel, drill string, and Blowout Preventer (BOP). Strong emphasis was placed on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hazard awareness, and strict safety protocols.
Overall, the excursion was an eye opening and inspiring experience that greatly improved the students’ understanding of drilling engineering and oilfield operations. The group expressed sincere appreciation to Charlvon Limited for the opportunity, warm hospitality, and valuable knowledge shared by the on-site professionals.
