The 2024 IADC Health, Safety, Environment & Training (HSET) Conference & Exhibition took place 6-7 February in Houston, Texas. The conference provided a forum to learn, exchange, and develop progressive HSE&T best practices to drive the upstream energy industry forward. The focus of this event was on understanding and delivering optimal human and organizational HSE&T performance. IADC sponsored 23 Student Chapter Members to attend the conference this year.
Drilling Contractor Interviews from the 2024 IADC HSE&T Conference
Military methodology helps Seadrill bolster safety training for offshore supervisors
Recently, Seadrill partnered with Safety Futures, a training organization, to incorporate the SMEACS (Situation, Mission, Execution, Administration and Logistics, Command and Signal) methodology into a training program specifically designed for offshore supervisors. The resulting program, SHARED Supervision, reinforces safety learnings with on-the-job “missions” that allow teams to apply the knowledge gained in training sessions in a real-time application.
In this interview with Drilling Contractor, Neil Forrest, VP of HSE and Sustainability at Seadrill, discussed the genesis of the SHARED Supervision collaboration and the value that it brings to Seadrill. Ralph Shreeve, CEO and Founder at E7 and Executive Director at Safety Futures, outlined the SMEACS methodology, which is commonly used by militaries around the world, and how that methodology can fit in a rig environment. The two also talked about the results of a pilot project conducted last year, and the lessons learned from that pilot.
Leadership critical in helping personnel create cultures of safe decision making
Arming organizations with the best tools to make critical decisions requires a culture that encourages people to observe potential hazards on the worksite. Understanding how the brain works when making snap judgments can be crucial in helping to develop that culture, said Jim Spigener, Chief Client Officer at DEKRA. In this video interview with DC taken from the IADC Health, Safety, Environment and Training (HSE&T) Conference, Mr Spigener talked about the role leadership plays in developing effective decision makers. He also spoke about the hazards that can negatively affect decision making, including the fast brain/slow brain split indicating the unconscious mechanisms the human mind uses to solve problems.
Maximizing digital training options requires a thorough understanding of hands-on rig experiences
Physical training in traditional in-person classrooms still hold a lot of value in the industry. However, with digital e-learning platforms becoming a more viable option for companies, the challenges of replicating the same hands-on experiences seen in a rig environment have become more apparent, said Michael Fry, Director at MR Deepwater Subsea. Speaking to DC from the 2023 IADC HSE&T Conference, Mr Fry discussed the role of technology in training, as well as the successes and limitations in teaching manual skills in a digital setting. He also explored alternative strategies, such as hybrid training models and competency assessments, that could enhance skill acquisition and retention in a digital environment.
