On 16 July, Ursula von der Leyden, a center-right Christian Democratic Union candidate, was elected as the next EU Commission President. She is the first woman to service in the post, and her term will begin in November 2019 for a five-year term. Assuming ratification by the Parliament, she will be the first German to hold the post since 1967. The focus of her presidency will be centered on the following priorities referred to as the Political Guidelines:

- An economy that works for the digital age
- Protecting the European way of life
- A stronger Europe in the world
- new push for European democracy
