IADC WellSharp® Live
IADC’s WellSharp Live provides the same comprehensive well control training like its quarter-century predecessor, WellSharp. The new remote-learning platform is designed and deployed with rigorous, individualized training for those in the industry with well control responsibilities. WellSharp is the industry standard for providing trainees with in-depth knowledge, well-honed role-specific skills, and greater overall confidence in their competency to prevent and handle well control incidents.
About the Program
WellSharp Live leverages technology to offer live, instructor-led training courses to support ongoing training and learning. This remote-learning option maintains the same quality and integrity that WellSharp is known for, offering an interactive learning environment and real-time quality monitoring throughout the course and assessment proctoring.
With a 1-on-1 ratio exam proctoring, eye movement tracker, enhanced authentication processes, and AI-guided web browser restrictions, WellSharp Live allows virtual instruction to remain an accepted delivery method for well control training.
IADC is currently accepting applications from training providers who wish to deliver the WellSharp course via distance-learning.

Q. What is the difference between WellSharp and WellSharp Live?
WellSharp is the IADC’s flagship well control training accreditation program that was launched in 2015. WellSharp Live is a distance learning option that was developed in March of 2020 as a temporary solution to social distancing and travel restrictions during the Covid-19 global pandemic. In late 2020, IADC’s Well Control Advisory Panel identified the need to transition WellSharp Live into a viable long-term offering.
Q. Why did the cost of WellSharp Live increase on 1 May 2021?
The cost increase is due to 3 main factors:
Enhanced proctoring: In order to transition WellSharp Live from a temporary, stopgap option during the Covid-19 pandemic into a permanent delivery option, the WellSharp Advisory Panel identified the need to enhance online proctoring. The new service – ProctorU – offers one-on-one proctoring and enhanced security features such as eye movement monitoring, screen locking, and restricted access to websites and computer programs. The Panel felt these enhancements were critical to maintaining high standards and keeping virtual training as an accepted delivery option long term.
Fee consolidation: The per day, per user virtual classroom access fee was incorporated into the new fee. This decision was made to address feedback about the difficulty of managing invoices with multiple vendors. The consolidated fees will alleviate unnecessary administrative burden on companies to manage multiple vendor invoices.
KREW bundle: The increased cost includes full access to KREW, including the continuous leaning library. KREW is designed to improve knowledge retention between training periods. While the WellSharp Advisory Panel recognizes that continuous learning is critical for both online and in-person trainees, the decision was made to introduce it in phases to make it more manageable. Performance analytics will be monitored during this first phase to inform decisions regarding the eventual plan to incorporate KREW for in-person trainees.
Q. Why is WellSharp Live Being Combined with KREW?
The WellSharp Advisory Panel strives to change the well control training model in our industry to address knowledge retention and decay. Combining WellSharp Live with KREW is an important first step toward this goal. It will allow a seamless transition from WellSharp training into a continuous learning program to help trainees retain knowledge of well control concepts.
Q. Why does the 1 May 2021 cost increase apply to WellSharp Live, but not WellSharp in person?
While the WellSharp Advisory Panel recognizes that continuous learning is critical for both online and in-person trainees, the decision was made to introduce it in phases to make it more manageable. Performance analytics will be monitored during this first phase to inform decisions regarding the eventual plan to incorporate KREW for in-person trainees.
Q. My company already has continuing education training modules. Why do I need KREW?
WellSharp has over 30 years of evolving under its belt. As the industry standard bearer for collaboration and standardization, WellSharp represents the collective interests of Operators, Drilling Contractors, and Field Service Companies.
Q. What kind of security features does the permanent version of WellSharp Live have?
WellSharp Live’s new security features include eye movement monitoring, screen-locking features, restricted website and computer program access. WellSharp Live’s long-term viability and integrity is our utmost focus as we transition the temporary program into a viable permanent option.
Q. How can my company trust the results of distance-learning well control training?
IADC is the only accrediting body in the drilling industry to hold an ISO 9001:2015 certification. In its 15th straight year being ISO-certified, IADC is committed to high-quality training and accreditation. The WellSharp Advisory Panel represents industry recognized subject matter experts from Operators, Drilling Contractors, and Field Service Companies. Based on the expertise of these Panel members, several features including eye movement monitoring, screen-locking, restricted website and computer program access have been incorporated to enhance training integrity and security.
Q. Why are we considering a new model for well control training?
Knowledge decay and retention has been a long-held discussion in academic circles, and in our industry. While well control training currently is focused on maximizing “the learning curve,” the industry has collectively spent less effort at minimizing “the forgetting curve.” KREW is the first, comprehensive approach to creating a continuous-learning system for critical well control concepts.
Knowledge retention will be the goal of the new training model, focusing on three key components:
• Effective initial learning
• Structured continuous learning
• Application of the learning
The WellSharp Advisory Panel discussed the need to address continuous learning during the development of WellSharp in 2015. It was determined at that time, however, that the initial focus needed to be on curriculum and assessment revisions as phase 1, with a plan to address continuing education as part of phase 2.
