Welcome

The Asia Pacific region continues to position itself as a dynamic and vibrant market where rapid economic and demographic growth will sustain demand for oil, and gas drilling and exploration in Asia in the foreseeable future.
However, the industry needs future-ready leaders to drive the transformation to ensure the industry is equipped with relevant competencies and capabilities in order to overcome current and future industry challenges.

Collaborative efforts and partnerships; continuous innovation and investment with regard to attracting and retaining a competent and skilled workforce; and also the implementation of new technologies and practices that work will all be crucial in addressing those evolving challenges with achieving cost and operational efficiencies, sustainability and meeting stakeholder expectations.

The IADC HSE & Sustainability Asia Pacific 2025 Conference & Exhibition, which will be held on 14-15 May 2025, will explore the critical challenges that drilling professionals face in this environment. In the face of prolonged low oil prices, how can companies high-grade their assets, right-size their organizations and equip their employees with the right competencies, all while staying on the cutting edge of the digital oilfield evolution?

Putting the Human and Organizational Performance Principles into Practice: Aaron Buckleton, HSE Coach, Thomas Koester, Noble Corporation
The oil and gas industry is becoming increasingly interested in the concept of Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) which constitutes a high-level philosophy setting a direction for how to think on an abstract level. But how can HOP be operationalized into concrete activities, learnings, and tools? This presentation will show practical examples of how Noble is putting HOP principles into practice on three levels: The mindset and the skillset of the offshore worker, and the toolset which can be used during daily operation. The toolset, which is supporting the mindset and skillset, offers more than 20 simple tools which can be used stand-alone or in different combinations de-pending on the context and objective. Mindset, skillset, and toolset are, in combination, based on a bottom-up involvement of the frontline worker in discussions and reflections over work, their co-creation of own work conditions and the facilitation of an environment characterized by high psychological safety.

14.30 Safety Culture & Effective Leadership Session
Session Chair: Alexander Maroske, Head of QHSSE, Energy Drilling Management

Developing a Sustainable Culture in Uncertain Times within the Oil and Gas Industry: Marc Vaillancourt, Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Knight, The REACH Group
This paper explores the critical task of developing a sustainable culture amidst industry challenges and growth, focusing on two major hurdles: the generational gap and the gap in leadership skills among supervisors. The generational gap within the industry often leads to differing values, work ethics, and communication styles, which can create friction and hinder progress. We analyze these differences and propose strategies to bridge this gap, fostering a cohesive and forward-thinking workforce.

Cultural Humility, the Key to a More Harmonious Workplace: Peter Hone, Business Development Manager, ABL Group
Whether we work in management, sales, finance, HSE, operations or admin, we all have our own language. Our own way of doing things. What happens when we don’t understand the language? We get frustrated, we blame them when things go wrong, we stop communicating and we almost certainly start to announce them as silos…or worse still, as toxic. We do not have the skillsets to cross into and respect those sub-cultures. This paper will deliver a snapshot from my doctoral research with some important findings that will help your workplace become safer and more harmonious.

Rig-Based Training Platform for Developing Competent Well-Service Personnel in the Indonesian Oil and Gas Industry: Mukhamad Faeshol Umam, Senior Trainer, Agus Alexandri, Human Resource Development Center for Oil and Gas, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Indonesia
Our research investigates the novel application of a 350 HP mobile rig as a training platform for well service personnel in Indonesia’s oil and gas industry. The study shows that live rig training aligns better with the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) than simulators because it focuses on hands-on training in rig operations, well service, and safety procedures. The findings offer industry stakeholders valuable insights into improving workforce competency, retention, and field operations readiness through practical, real-world training methods.

A Holistic View of Human Factors: Petter Johnsen, Chief Executive Officer and Partner, Sahar Snell, Morten Andreassen, Presight Solutions
High-risk industries must integrate human factors into barrier management to reduce major accident events, as 92% of such incidents are linked to human factors. Challenges include forecasting workloads, aligning training and competencies with technical requirements, and managing siloed data, leading to inefficiencies and increased risks. Visualizing human factors alongside operational and organizational barriers offers a holistic view of risk, enabling proactive risk management. An integrated approach combining human and technical elements enhances understanding of barriers and supports effective safety practices. We explore strategies and best practices to strengthen the role of human factors in barrier management.

How to Generate Meaningful Change in the Industry Approach to Human Factors Training and its Impact on Organisational & Safety Cultures: David Mugridge, Managing Consultant, Mugridge Consulting OÜ & Lead Consultant, Mission Performance
Our situation remains stubborn and even today we see preventable deaths, injuries & lost time incidents from avoidable and known causes. (Source IOGP Safety Report 2022). We have a loose ALARP mindset but without fully applying a learning culture we lack those incremental gains to improve Human Performance and drive towards Industry Risk 0. So today, we are unable to breakthrough to a solution and face a significant challenge.  In short, how to manage the change from Blame to Learning?  The complexity of the industry and the nature of the work means our traditional measurement methods are increasingly mis-directed, do not promote suitable analysis and therefore are ineffective at solving our problem. The presentation will show how we can tackle these issues with a more holistic approach, integrate AI & deliver a safer more human focused industry.

Enhancing Sustainability in Oilfield Cementing: Utilizing Well Site Water (WSW) as a Freshwater Alternative for Oilfield Drilling Operations: Abdullah Rashid AL Tamimi, Cementing Technical Engineer, Ahmed Al Hadidi, Issa Shavoun, Abraj Energy Services
The sustainable and innovative approach of reducing reliance on freshwater resources was demonstrated through the use of well site water (WSW) in the formulation of cement slurry for oilfield drilling operations. This study addressed the operational and environmental challenges posed by high salinity in WSW, assuring compatibility with cementing requirements through laboratory tests such as thickening time, free water, fluid loss, and compressive strength. The customer criteria and operational integrity were met by the adjusted slurry design, which showed equivalent or superior performance in comparison to freshwater-based formulations. The implementation of this method eradicated the necessity for freshwater transportation, resulting in a substantial reduction in logistics costs and CO emissions. Additionally, it offered a sustainable and dependable solution for oilfield operations. During the presentation, an animation will be presented to illustrate the process and advantages.
