Welcome

Across Africa – from the prolific northern countries like Egypt, Algeria, and Libya, to the more mature oil and gas markets in the south and western part of the continent like Mauritania, Nigeria, Angola, Ghana and Namibia, all the way to the eastern side, including Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique and Tanzania where oil and gas exploration is still emerging – there is increasing complexity all around. This complexity, coupled with changing oil prices continues to bring about fast-paced market changes. In addition to multiple opportunities and challenges unique to Africa, many parts of the continent will struggle to grow or even maintain their economies in the face of declining oil and gas revenues from one side and the global shift to greener and cleaner energy sources from another side How can the industry rise to meet these challenges and still embrace fresh opportunities from onshore to ultra-deepwater?

The qualification and field deployment of an enhanced Expandable Sand Screen packer (EXR Hanger/Packer) re-engineered to function as a production packer in offshore Nigerian wells. The objective is to demonstrate how this innovation improves upper completion efficiency, reduces rig time, and aligns with operational goals for cost savings, process safety, and well integrity.

Enhancing Performance and Safety During Milling Operations with Reduced Footprint Surface Equipment: Craig Martin, Global Business Development Manager, Archer
Milling operations are frequently carried out to recover slots and set well barriers. The surface handling of debris from milling can restrict performance and expose personnel to the risk of injury. A case study is presented, illustrating the development and application of technology to increase performance and safety on such campaigns. While established technologies can provide efficient management of debris, these often take considerable space and power, which can be problematic on small rigs and platforms. To meet this challenge a compact, modular system was developed and successfully tested on a series of slot recovery and decommissioning campaigns.

Case Studies: Smarter Way of Drilling & Completions – Learnings and Extracted Value from Wired Drill Pipe (WDP) Deployments Offshore Norway Applicable to Africa Projects: Mats Andreas Andersen, Vice President Business Development, Downhole Broadband Solutions, NOV
Since 2014 there has been a growing adoption of Wired Drill Pipe (WDP) and Along-String Measurements (ASM) deployed for offshore drilling applications. The case studies and learnings presented will summarize the resulting value in terms of overall efficiency considering time and cost performance based on recent projects in North Sea. New technology deployed requires new way of operating. The capability of maintaining communications with downhole sensors independent of circulation is significant, and these benefits have been used to introduce better practices across all different parts of well construction activities, also including HPHT and MPD applications.

Downhole Dynamic Pressure Management with Unsupervised Learning: Ochuko Erivwo, Principal Well Engineer, Christian Sada, Benel Energy Resources
An unsupervised machine learning model applies cluster analysis to Dmod data for managing downhole pressure during oil well drilling. The model identifies transitions between normal and abnormal pressure states, enabling real-time early failure warnings. Validation on a case study from an onshore well in the Niger Delta area demonstrated the model’s effectiveness in minimizing operational losses. The proposed artificial intelligence-based approach addresses specific drilling challenges, enhances operational efficiency, and reduces costs.

TRIM Concept – Optimize Planned Work: Havard Sletvold, Chief Technology Officer, Ole-Erich Haas, Devin Correira, Farhan Hussein, AXESS
The goal of the TRIM concept is to streamline and standardize required annual inspections, certifications and verifications into fewer mobilizations with multi skilled personnel, to save cost to our clients and achieve zero harm to persons, the environment, assets and reputation.

Reevaluating Water Safety Training for the Offshore Industry: Why and How to Tackle Deep Water Fear and Establish Foundational Water Competency: Chidinma Obi Sedenu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, My Freedom From Fear
Why and how can and should offshore deployments be more inclusive for individuals with deep water fear or limited swimming ability. It introduces a precursory no-judgment water competency test (ahead of currently mandated BOSIET and HUET training requirements). It also introduces a foundational water training and competence course that would supplement current water survival training for those who need it. Doing this will enhance water safety, fitness for duty, mental health, hiring and retention, and workforce inclusion and diversity.
