Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a focal point for innovation across many industries, including oil and gas. Many of these innovations are discussed in countless presentations, papers and meetings throughout the industry. However, as with any quickly evolving technology, a centralized summary of the good this technology is providing is absent.
The IADC Advanced Rig Technology (ART) Committee is launching a new project to develop a whitepaper to inform the global drilling industry about how AI is being utilized to improve safety, improve operational efficiency and reduce costs on onshore and offshore drilling rigs.
The document would at a minimum include sections on:
- Basic definitions and demystification of AI and other terms commonly found in the space (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, etc.)
- Value-adding areas that will at a minimum contain examples for:
- Generative AI
- Process automation
- Drilling optimization
- Computer vision
- Equipment condition monitoring
- Basic considerations for development of these systems (e.g., high-quality data, computing infrastructure, technical talent needs, etc.) within the drilling space
The document will serve as an educational tool for decision makers within the industry responsible for assessing value and driving implementation of this technology. It would also offer an overview to outside parties (e.g., customers, regulators, or investors) of how our industry has progressed, modernized and generated value.
Please join us online from 10-11:30am on Monday, 25 August, to kick off this project, to be led by ART Committee Co-Chairs Alex Groh, Patterson-UTI, and Trent Martin, Transocean.
Please register online if you plan to attend. Zoom meeting details will be emailed out to all registered attendees prior to the meeting.
